MAIDENHEAD GARDENSHARE PROJECT

Sowing the seeds for a growing community

Lots of people in the Maidenhead area have gardens that are underused, or that go unmanaged due to a lack of time, interest, or physical mobility. At the same time there are many residents living in flats, town houses and rented accommodation, who have no access to a garden, and who would love the chance to grow their own food, herbs and flowers.

This is a local initiative, by Transition Town Maidenhead, linking up people who have an unused corners of their garden with local  growers. Many of us have had enough of life as nettle-farmers and want to use our unloved plots to grow cabbages, connections – even friends! The benefits for the garden owners  include a share of the produce, the pleasure of seeing a lovely developing vegetable plot, and the sense of community in being part of a sharing initiative.

This service matches and introduces committed, enthusiastic, and growers with local garden owners who want to see their gardens being used more productively.

Get involved

If you are wishing for the chance to get outside, grow some tasty veggies, get your hands dirty, and vastly reduce the food miles involved in your food, or if you have a garden plot that you would like to offer to a grower, then please contact Kath at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. HOW THE SCHEME WORKS

Gardenshare Procedure and Guidelines

Garden owners interested in joining the scheme will be visited and some photos of the garden will be taken for posting on the website. We will chat about your expectations and situation. Please note:

That the garden owner offers an agreed part of their garden for a grower to grow on.

That the gardener is not required to trim hedges, prune roses or mow lawns, as that is not the remit of the scheme.

Gardeners  interested in joining the scheme will be interviewed for a general chat about your experience and commitment. Please note that:

You will be responsible for your plot and will share a proportion (we recommend 1/4 - 1/5) of the produce. with the owner.

You will be charged £10 per annum to cover our administration costs and to join our Public Liabilty scheme.

We  will:

Match the gardener with a garden local to them, as close as possible.

Making sure that their expectations and schedules match those of the garden owner.

Call the garden owner and put them in touch.

Give the gardener and garden owner each copies of the Gardenshare Certificate of agreed terms to sign when they meet.

Give both parties a call every now and then and, at the end of each season send out feedback forms to hear how each gardenshare is working.
